finding the root of an equation with variables

Hello Math Gurus. Ever since I have encountered finding the root of an equation with variables at school I never seem to be able to cope with it well. I am well versed at all the other chapters , but this particular branch seems to be my weakness . Can some one help me in understanding it well?

Algebrator is one beneficial tool. I don’t have much interest in math and have found it to be difficult all my life. Yet one cannot always leave math because it sometimes becomes a compulsory part of one’s course work. My younger brother is a math expert and I found this software in his palmtop . It was only then I understood why he finds this subject to be so easy.
